It has been a busy day. Our ferry arrived in Juneau at 4:30 AM. We were the last vehicle off and headed up to Mendenhall Glacier. Since the park did not open for 2 1/2 hours, we got in a nice nap in the camper. It sure is nice to have all you need contained in one vehicle.
After a nap and breakfast, we headed into the park. The story of the retreat of the glacier is certainly alarming. Where this picture was taken, the glacier covered 50 years ago. Never-the-less, the vews are still magnificent.
Our time at the visitor center included a great video and then we were off to see the glacier and go for a 4-mile hike. As expected, it was busy at the start, but as we progressed up the trail, we saw fewer and fewer folks.
We feel lucky to be here early in the season. With 68 degrees, no wind and sunshine, it was the perfect day.
Next stop was our campground, right at Mendenhall Park. It will be our home for the next 4
nights. There are plenty of sign’s warning
about bears, but we are more worried about the mosquito’s. I think we will need to get used to both in
the next month.

So concerning about the shrinking glacier. The views are just gorgeous.
