Homer Alaska - Bear Watching

Today was another new and exciting day of adventure in Alaska. We went on a long planned and anticipated bear watching tour. We caught a flight in a Cessna 206 aircraft on a personal guided tour of Clark Lake National Park in a quest to find bears.

In July and August, the bears fish for Red Salmon in these streams. This time of year, they graze on grasses along the rivers and head out on the mud flats at low tide to search for clams.

It was very exciting to land on the beach in the aircraft (it has huge tires). We went on a hike, mostly along the coast of Chinitna Bay. We saw 11 different bears through the course of the 3 hours tour.

We had a couple of superb guides/pilots and learned a lot about bears in their natural habitat. It sure is different watching them lumber over a long distance and interact in nature than it is seeing them pace back and forth in a zoo cage.

Our flight home was over a glacier and near a volcano venting some steam. The pilot actually let me handle the yoke a bit on the way home.

Bears, exercise and flying lessons in a single day. How great is that?

We flew to Clark Lake National Park, about 60 miles from Homer

         We landed on the beach

Then we went for a 4 mile walk along the beach, that is a bear photobomming our picture

and we did find bears 🐻

This fellow displayed curious or slightly agressive tendencies.  That is not a telephoto picture.  He was 22 feet away from us.

Some bear 💩 that Julie almost stepped in 🙂

    1. Thanks Dan.... right now we don't know if we will ever return, so we are experiencing as much as possible. I keep thinking how much you would love it up here.
