Juneau, Alaska

We had another busy day in the Juneau area.  It is amazing what you can do with 18 hours of sunlight.  The day started with another hike on the other side of the Mendenhall glacier lake.  Just another hike through a beautiful temperate rainforest, along a glacial lake with a fabulous glacier on the horizon.  There was a glacial wind coming off the glacier that made things interesting for the boats on the lake.

After our hike, we headed to nearby Douglas Island for a kayak tour.  It was a beautiful day to be on the water.  Our arms are not quite in “kayaking shape” so we worked hard to cover the 4 miles into the bay, fighting with the wind and the tides.  We were treated to see a fledgling bald eagle, many other mature eagles, as well as a dahl dolphin and a few harbor seals.  The surroundings were beautiful with the glacier off on one side and the Chilkoot Mountains in the West.

Our guide was not able to find any whales but assured us that they would be plentiful when we head north on the ferry on Wednesday.
