Bird Creek to Homer

What a birthday I had today. I woke up and my sweet wife made me coffee (the only thing that she cooks for me) and it was good. It was served with a Berry Walnut scone as big as your hand that we saved from yesterday.

We scooted down the Turnagain Arm about 20 miles to the mountain town of Girdwood. The resort is in the Chugach Mountains, which are renowned for their helicopter skiing (someday). I have skied here no less than 20 times. Before 9/11, I used to catch a ride on FedEx freighters up to Anchorage from Chicago and ski Alyeska several times a winter. It brought back a lot of good memories.

To justify eating an 800-calorie scone, we went on a 6 mile hike. We did not see any wildlife, except for a squirrel and huge bear 💩, right at the start of the hike. As usual, the walk was beautiful and the weather was perfect. We have been very lucky to be in Alaska and have perfect weather. They need rain badly and it can rain as much as the locals want as soon as we depart, next Thursday.

After the hike, we hit the road again and drove to Homer. We had stunning scenery along the way. Julie cooked tonight (okay, we went out for a beer and pizza).

When we got to our campsite at the end of the Homer Spit, the attendant announced that we had the best site in the place. We have a beachfront site on the edge of the campground. She was not lying.

All in all, it was a very memorable birthday.

The wildlife along the way....now that I am 64 and an adult, I don't take pictures of poop 💩

  2. I think a gin and tonic is all it would take to share my itinerary. I do think we are looking forward to some time at home after this.... Lots of good memories though.
